The Werner von Siemens Award – a challenge for scientists, students and teachers
The Werner von Siemens Award is a traditional competition for the best young brains and it is organised by Siemens Czech Republic (patronage over the International Masaryk Conference) in cooperation with the Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Rectors Conference, Czech Technical University in Prague, Charles University and under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
This traditional competition for the best master’s thesis, doctoral thesis and scientific works and the best university teacher has six categories and is open to everyone who professionally focuses their work on engineering, economics or selected sciences.
The Award for Overcoming Obstacles During Studies will be awarded for the first time. This prize will be awarded to the student that notwithstanding a disability or disadvantage overcame a series of obstacles and who achieved exceptional study or research results. Unlike in other categories, this prize may be won by students not only in Master and Doctoral programmes but also in Bachelor programmes specialising in technical fields. Nominees are nominated by leading university staff and the winner is selected by a panel headed by the Rector of Masaryk University in Brno, doc. PhDr. Mikuláš Bek, Ph.D., in cooperation with an expert consultant for this category, that being the Director of the Endowment Fund for the Employment of Disabled Persons (Nadační fond pro zaměstnávání osob se zdravotním postižením), Hana Potměšilová.
For the first time this year, prize money in the amount of CZK 5,000 will be awarded to whoever recommends a future winner in the Best Master’s Thesis and Best Doctoral Thesis categories.
Dissertations aimed at technical and selected science fields may be registered in the competition using the
microsite on the Siemens website.
Over 300 students, teachers and scientists have been awarded prizes in the years past. Siemens has provided a total of eight million Czech crowns in prize money in support of Czech education and science. The Award is presented regularly as part of the long-term efforts and support of Siemens to intensify the dialogue between the state sector and the private sector in regards to science, research, development and education.
